Understanding Marks Needed Calculator

Marks needed translates an overall target into the marks still required from remaining assessments. It is intended for a course whose components combine by adding earned marks and maximum marks directly. Enter the marks you have already earned, the maximum available from the completed assessments and the maximum still available. The calculator combines the two maxima, applies the target percentage and subtracts earned marks. If the required amount exceeds the remaining maximum, the target is impossible under the entered totals. If earned marks already secure the target, the minimum required amount is zero. Unlike a weighted-grade calculation, this method assumes each raw mark has the same value in the combined total. When an assignment worth twenty marks contributes forty percent of a course, raw addition would be inappropriate unless that weighting has already been applied. Use the final grade tool for separately weighted completed and remaining work.

Raw totals must share one additive marking scheme. A fractional requirement may need rounding upward if the examiner awards only whole marks.

Formula

Required marks = target / 100 × (completed maximum + remaining maximum) − earned marks

Worked example

You earned 60 of 80, with 20 remaining and an 85% target. Required = 85 − 60 = 25, which exceeds 20 and is impossible.
