SGPA vs CGPA: Key Differences, Conversion Formulas, and Real Examples
In university credit systems across the globe, including UGC and AICTE-accredited universities in India and collegiate systems in North America, students encounter two distinct performance metrics on their grade cards: SGPA and CGPA. While both express academic performance on a 10-point or 4-point scale, they represent completely different windows of your academic career.
1. What is SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average)?
SGPA evaluates your academic performance within a single semester or term. It is computed as the weighted average of the grade points earned in all courses taken during that specific term, where the weights are the credits assigned to each course.
SGPA = Σ(Course Grade Points × Course Credits) / Σ(Course Credits)
If you take 5 subjects in Semester 1 totaling 20 credits and earn an SGPA of 8.4, that score reflects exclusively your work during those specific four to five months.
2. What is CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average)?
CGPA measures your continuous academic standing across all completed semesters from Day 1 to graduation. Crucially, CGPA is not simply the simple arithmetic average of your SGPAs unless every single semester had the exact same number of credits!
CGPA = Σ(Semester SGPA × Semester Credits) / Σ(Total Credits Across All Semesters)
3. Step-by-Step Conversion Example
Consider an engineering student across their first two semesters:
- Semester 1: 24 Credits, SGPA = 8.5 → Credit Points = 24 × 8.5 = 204
- Semester 2: 20 Credits, SGPA = 7.5 → Credit Points = 20 × 7.5 = 150
Total Credit Points = 204 + 150 = 354. Total Credits = 24 + 20 = 44.
True CGPA = 354 / 44 = 8.05 (Notice that a simple average would yield (8.5 + 7.5)/2 = 8.00, which underrepresents the student’s true performance!).
