How to Convert CGPA to Percentage Accurately: Official CBSE & University Formulas

When applying for higher education programs or submitting documents for public sector recruitment (such as UPSC, SSC, or PSU gate admissions), students are frequently asked to provide their overall academic score in percentage rather than CGPA. However, converting between these metrics isn’t a one-size-fits-all multiplication. In this comprehensive guide, we unpack the mathematical foundations established by major education authorities.

1. The CBSE 9.5 Multiplier Rule Explained

In 2010, the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) transitioned secondary certificates to a 10-point Cumulative Grade Point Average. Along with this reform, CBSE prescribed an official multiplying factor of 9.5:

Overall Percentage (%) = CGPA × 9.5

Why 9.5 instead of 10? CBSE analysts examined the marks distribution of students scoring within the top grade bands. They observed that the historical average percentage of students earning the highest grade point (10) centered around 95%, rather than 100%. Multiplying by 9.5 therefore yields the most statistically equitable approximation of raw marks.

2. AICTE and Technical University Formulas

Unlike CBSE secondary schooling, college engineering and technical universities governed by AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) often use slightly different formulas. Here is a breakdown of major institutional conversion standards:

  • AICTE Standard Recommendation: Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10. For example, an 8.0 CGPA becomes (8.0 - 0.75) × 10 = 72.5%.
  • Direct 10-Point Scale (Anna University, KTU): Percentage = CGPA × 10. In these universities, an 8.5 CGPA simply equals 85.0%.
  • Mumbai University Engineering: Percentage = 7.25 × CGPA + 11 (for CGPA ≥ 7.00).
  • VTU (Visvesvaraya Technological University): Percentage = (CGPA - 0.75) × 10.

3. What to Put on Your Resume or Job Application?

Always inspect the back side of your official university transcript or marksheet. By regulatory convention, universities print their certified conversion formula on the reverse side of the grade card. When filling out recruitment portals:

  1. Check your transcript for a certified conversion formula.
  2. If an official formula is specified, calculate your percentage using that exact equation.
  3. If your university does not specify an official rule, AICTE guidelines advise using (CGPA - 0.75) × 10 or CBSE’s CGPA × 9.5.
